Feeling a bit Moroccan with The Crafters Workshop Stencils

I have always wanted to go to Morocco.
With The Crafters Workshop, I came close today. The Lacy Tiles stencil designed by Julie Fei-Fan Balzer made me think of Moroccan tiles.

This was a start, stop and redo project taking about 8 hours. I began with a gessoed substrate and actually used a different stencil and when I colorized it I did not like the look. SO, more gesso. I layered tissue papers, music sheets and text pages.
I then added images from our Vintage Text pages with gel medium and stenciled TCW Light and Fluffy texture around them.

Loved the texture of the stencil but disliked the images...I literally tore the still damp images off in pieces which created even more texture. (loved that) Now for colors. I stenciled acrylic paints onto the non-textured areas. I mixed colors as I went, mostly heavy body acrylics. I used my fingers to create the randomness of color.

I wanted softness, rubbing with titanium buff acrylic paint. The richness of all the layers of paints really spoke to me, that feel of ages old tile work.

I incorporated a paint I adore which is quinacridone, using interference green-gold oxide and another of yellow-green. The blue was India ink which I used bold then softened with buff. You can see the shine of the interference above.
To add even more definition I used TCW Shimmery Goodness with a small brush into the recessed areas of texture.

I again went to my stash of vintage papers and gathered some pages from an old Arabic language book.

I sprayed goosebumps mist onto the finished piece for even more a luxurious appearance and a reminder of the elegance which can be Morocco. I realized it still needed more. I have a box of jewelry pieces and found the earrings, removed the backings and affixed with E6000 for a permanent hold. The finishing touch was with my fingers and titanium white paint around the edges for definition. HOPE YOU LIKE IT!

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages. I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent! Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar. Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them. Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA! You have made your own solvent for literally pennies. You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a HUGE jar on the window sill! Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
