The Secrets of the Ocean

I have been still playing with the Under the Sea Theme since my return from my recent seaside retreat.  I am participating in a journal swap and chose this as my theme and then having a Fishy Altered Pages Collage Sheets turn up in my mail box recently I decided to play some more.

This is a double page spread I created in my small Dylusions Art Journal.

Because I was not using paint on my initial background layer I choose not to Gesso my pages.  I took some watery colors from my Gelatos and scribbled across the background before smearing and smoothing the color in with a baby wipe.  I then used some Navy Blue Ink with some bubble wrap to randomly stamp some bubble like detail.

A piece of 8 x 8 paper from the Color Me Happy Paper Collection from Glitz had a net like appearance and was the perfect color.  I tore this in half to add a piece to each side of my spread and added some bubble wrap stamping to this too.

Once my paper was stuck down I then took a palette knife and some texture paste and ran some around the page borders.  I had a home made texture stamp I had made using a hot glue gun on some cardboard so I used this to add texture to my paste border.

While this was wet I also took some netting I had left over from a previous Mail Box Muse Art Kit and cutting into random shapes added around my border.  The wet texture paste helped this to stick in place.

Once the paste was dry I then used a mix of green and blue paints and covered everything.

While the paint was wet I also gave some thought to embellishing my border a little more.  Dew Drops, Sequins or Beads from a recent op shop find?  The Dew Drops and Sequins won out.

Then it was time to add all things fishy (collage sheet), a few shells, a star fish with some stamps and a old style diving helmet and text from some other papers I had left overs from.  But before doing so I took out a green gelato and drew in some seaweed, and a with a blue water color pencil shaded around the internal edges of my border and also added some downward strokes across my watery background.  My two larger fish were popped up a little with some foam dots.  I long to discover all the secrets of the sea, but alas I think there are many that will remain hidden from us all.

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
